Chinatown center delivers shoes, gift bags to children

Norman Fong, the deputy director of the Chinatown Community Development Center, in partnership with My New Red Shoes, will help provide 400 Chinatown children living in single-room occupancy hotels with new shoes and gift bags from 1 to 4 p.m. today.

How did this partnership come to be? Last year was the first year we did it, but we are more organized this year. My New Red Shoes toured a single-room occupancy unit and were shocked by how many people were crammed into one room. They said, “Yes, we want to help these kids!”

Why is this timely? School is coming up and summer is the perfect time to get these kids looking good. It gives a little bit of hope for families during these tough economic times.

Who will be receiving this gift? [About] 300 families will be coming today, so about 400 kids will be getting new shoes. Last year, the kids loved their new shoes.

What does this mean to you? In Chinatown, you gain appreciation for a lot of things in life. These people don’t have simple luxuries like new shoes or their own bathroom. My dream is that these kids will be able to move on and live somewhere else, but in the meantime we have to deal with what we’ve got.
