Chihuahuas make up one-third of shelters' population 

The prized tiny dogs are increasingly being abandoned by their owners and showing up at shelters, according to Animal Care and Control. The agency will hold a news conference at noon today at its headquarters, 1200 15th St., to heighten awareness of the problem and help more dogs get adopted during the holidays. One-third of the agency’s animals are Chihuahuas or Chihuahua mixes.
