Wei-Yin Chen may be a rookie with the Baltimore Orioles, but he continues to pitch like a talented veteran.
Chen struck out 12 in just 5²⁄³ innings, and the Orioles got homers from Matt Wieters and Omar Quintanilla in a 6-1 victory over the A’s on Sunday afternoon.

Chen (9-6) set a record for strikeouts by a Taiwanese-born pitcher, breaking the mark of 10 that Chien-Ming Wang set on June 17, 2007, when pitching with the Yankees.

Chen also mystified the A’s when pitching against them earlier this season. He gave up one run on six hits with four strikeouts in a 10-1 win on April 28.

“Twice, he’s been good against us,” A’s manager Bob Melvin said. “Today, he was just throwing his fastball by us and wasn’t afraid to use it. [He] pitched a great game.”

Adam Jones gave the Orioles (53-49) a 1-0 lead in the fourth with an RBI double before Wieters came up with runners at second and third and one out.

Wieters blasted a three-run homer off starter Travis Blackley (3-3) for a 4-0 lead.

Blackley struggled mightily, allowing six hits, four walks and five earned runs in defeat.

The A’s (55-46) got a run in the sixth off Chen on a Yoenis Cespedes RBI single. Quintanilla then hit a solo homer in the bottom half for a 6-1 lead.

NOTE: Prior to Sunday’s game, the A’s added catcher George Kottaras in a trade with the Milwaukee Brewers for pitcher Fautino De Los Santos. Kottaras, who was designated for assignment Thursday, was hitting .209 with three home runs and 12 RBIs in 58 games. He has played in parts of five seasons with Boston and Milwaukee. The A’s have not announced a corresponding major-league roster move.
