Censored: Saudi Arabia blocks Amnesty International website

WHAT: After Amnesty International posted a leaked copy of Saudi Arabia’s repressive new anti-terrorism bill, the Saudis shut down the group’s website inside the kingdom.

WHY: Amnesty was highly critical of the proposed law, which would allow peaceful dissent or harming the state’s reputation both to be prosecuted as terrorist crimes.

WHAT HAPPENED NEXT: Amnesty quickly moved the full Arabic text of the anti-terrorism bill onto another website, along with official commentary by a Saudi security committee.
