CCSF looks to take next step in quest for hoops title

The City College of San Francisco men’s basketball team took a step closer to the Final Four, dismantling Butte College 86-52 in the first round of the California Community College Athletic Association this past weekend.

Guard Collin Chiverton led the way for the host Rams with 21 points, and Coast Conference Co-MVP Jonathon Williams chipped in with 20 points as CCSF jumped out to a 42-16 halftime lead.

"We came out and played the best half of basketball we’ve played all season," City College coach Justin Labagh said. "I was thrilled with the way we started this playoff run."

Next up for the Rams (28-1) is Reedley College, which defeated Ohlone College 69-56 in its first-round game.

Reedley (20-6) will be looking to spoil the Rams’ dream season, but faces the daunting task of upsetting the state’s No. 1-ranked team.

Labagh knows it will not be easy, noting that anything can happen at this stage of the season.

"Reedley is a dangerous team. They take a lot of tough shots, yet make them," Labagh said. "They’re just as athletic as we are, however, I think we’re deeper, smarter and I’m glad we get to play them in our gym."

Game time is set for 7:30 p.m. inside the Wellness Center at City College on Wednesday.
