Cathy Murphy helps seniors' family caregivers peace of mind

The owner of the Home Instead Senior Care office in San Francisco has spent the past eight years providing resources to adults who monitor the health of their elderly parents. In collaboration with Humana Points of Caregiving, Home Instead launched a senior emergency kit after one of its patients was hospitalized for confusing his medication.

How important is it for the elderly person and their adult child to have a kit like this? It’s extremely important particularly if there’s an emergency, which often happens with seniors. If there’s a need for an emergency visit either to the hospital or to the doctor, you need to know, or the medical professionals need to know, what medications the senior is taking and a medical history.

What is one of the more crucial elements of the kit? The medication tracker is probably one of the most critical. We end up with a lot of seniors who need help because they can’t keep track of their medication.

What is your overall goal with Home Instead? My ultimate goal is to give peace of mind to the adult daughter. If she can sleep at night, then we’re doing our job correctly.
