Carlsbad police: Detective caught stealing drugs

A veteran vice and narcotics detective is free on $25,000 bail and Carlsbad police have issued a statement explaining why he was arrested.

Monday's statement says he was arrested Thursday after being caught by several fellow employees stealing drugs from a storage room at police headquarters.

Forty-four-year-old Michael C. Koch was placed on paid administrative leave after the arrest. He posted bail on Friday.

Carlsbad police spokeswoman Jodee Sasway told the North County Times (http://bit.ly/xI4ysa ) it would jeopardize the investigation if she commented on the type or amount of drugs involved.

A phone number for Koch could not be located.

Sasway says the case is being prepared for the district attorney's office, which has until Friday to file charges.

Carlsbad is about 35 miles north of San Diego.
