Car picnic is back in speedway meadow

Start your engines. Jimmy’s Old Car Picnic was put back on the Rec and Park calendar for Speedway Meadow in Golden Gate Park on Oct. 16 in its 22nd year following a gnarly debate that’s been going on since 2009.

Rec and Park officials initially rejected organizer Jimmy O’Keefe’s permit stating that the cars weren’t kosher for the grass, and then offered him four other paved areas.

However O’Keefe, who was also a gardener in Golden Gate Park said he knew how to take care of the vegetation and that Speedway Meadow was the only home for his car picnic.

His website Wednesday announced an agreement had finally been reached and the event will stay in the meadow but it’ll cost more this year.

The site also announces some other changes: O’Keefe and his family will not be organizing the picnic anymore and this year it’s on a Saturday instead of a Sunday.
