Caltrain board to vote on final environmental report for electrification project

Caltrain’s plan to electrify its service could pass a major milestone next week.

The agency’s Board of Directors will vote to certify the final Environmental Impact Report and Project Adoption of its electrification project at its meeting on Thursday. With approval of the environmental document, Caltrain will be cleared to seek federal and state funding for the program.

Through electrification, Caltrain will able to speed up service by running more trains. Electrifying the trains — currently diesel-powered — will also decrease noise and air pollution. Emissions will be reduced by 90 percent through electrification.
