California Street cable cars not running

San Francisco’s historic cable cars on the California Street line may not have service restored until Thursday, San Francisco Municipal Railway spokesman Alan Siegel said today.

The line’s cable car service came to a halt at around 8:50 a.m. for reasons that are still under investigation, according to Siegel.

They were expected to be functioning by noon, but regular service won’t continue for at least several more hours, said Siegel.

"They may be up and running by this evening," said Siegel, but he added that it is just as likely the cable cars won’t be operating for the remainder of the day.

While the cables are being fixed, Muni buses will stop at the same locations as the California cable cars, Siegel said.

The California Street cable line runs east and west on California Street from the Financial District, through Chinatown, over Nob Hill and stops at Van Ness Avenue, according to Siegel.
