Calendar offers forth bare chests for charity

Mark Buckovich, the national marketing director at San Francisco law firm Gordon and Rees, is Mr. January in the 2011 Bare Chest Calendar and set a record for being auctioned for $16,000 at the calendar’s annual dinner date auction.

What is the Bare Chest Calendar? It is a calendar put together by a group of volunteers for the past 26 years. All of the money raised benefits AIDS Emergency Fund and the Positive Resource Center.

How is the calendar different? It’s different because it is so much more than just a calendar that sits on a shelf. All 12 men commit to participate in at least two fundraising events each month for a year. It requires a high level of commitment and the 12 men are actively involved in talking with people about HIV/AIDS in the community.

What is the dinner date auction? It is one of two events that helps raise the most money every year. Each man is auctioned off individually to competing bidders in the audience to go on a dinner date.

What would you like to see in the future with the Bare Chest Calendar? As the calendar is traditionally followed by the gay community, I would like to see even more of the heterosexual community supporting and getting involved in donating and bidding, as HIV/AIDS relates to more than just the gay community.
