Cabbie arrested on suspicion of raping passenger

A cabdriver was arrested Sunday for allegedly raping a Redwood City woman when she passed out in the passenger seat of his cab after drinking at a San Carlos bar.

San Carlos police officers arrested Jose Anenias Ramirez, 36, of Redwood City, on suspicion of sexually assaulting a 31-year-old woman Thursday night after picking her up at Clooney’s Pub to drive her home, police said.

The victim was drinking with a friend at the bar, located at 1189 Laurel St., when a taxi was summoned by acquaintances to pick her up. While in the cab, she fell unconscious, police said. Ramirez then drove her to a residential neighborhood at Cedar Street and Magnolia Avenue in San Carlos and raped her, police said.

Ramirez then took the victim to his home near Marshall and Chestnut streets in Redwood City where he raped her again, Cmdr. Rich Cinfio of the San Carlos Police Department said. The victim regained consciousness and found the assailant "on top of her," Cinfio said.

She immediately left the apartment without encountering any resistance from Ramirez, he said.

The victim called the police Friday afternoon. After talking to witnesses at Clooney’s Pub, the police tracked down and arrested Ramirez on Sunday at 5 p.m., Cinfio said. The victim was tested to see if she was drugged, he said, but the toxicology results weren’t immediately available.

"We move as quickly as we can to identify those responsible and bring them to justice," Cinfio said. "This is an unusual occurrence for this community."

Police said Ramirez ran his own small taxi service company, but they would not release the company’s name.

Ramirez had no history of arrests for sexual assault in San Mateo County, Chief Deputy District Attorney Steve Wagstaffe said. He is due in court next week for restitution to a hit-and-run committed in 2007 in Belmont.

Ramirez is charged with kidnapping, rape of an incapacitated person, false imprisonment and sexual battery. He is being held in the county jail without bail.
