Cabbie arrested in hit-and-run accident

A cabdriver was arrested in connection with a hit-and-run accident that seriously injured a pedestrian in the Lower Polk neighborhood early Monday.

Muhammed Yousas, 34, of Sacramento, who drives for Yellow Cab, was booked on one count of felony hit and run following the crash at Sutter and Polk streets around 1:50 a.m., police spokesman Officer Albie Esparza said.

The pedestrian, a 28-year-old man, suffered a concussion and a laceration to his head after being struck in the crosswalk on Polk Street, police said.

The victim was crossing on a green light when the taxi plowed into him, police said. Before the crash, the cabbie had made a right turn from westbound Sutter Street to southbound Polk Street, Esparza said.

The taxi fled, but patrol units who had a description of the vehicle soon pulled over a cabbie at Gough and Market streets, Esparza said.

The victim is recovering from his injuries, which were not considered life threatening, Esparza said.
