Bystander caught in crossfire of Mission district shooting in San Francisco

A bystander was hit by gunfire in an early morning shootout Sunday between two people in the Mission district, San Francisco police said.

The shooting erupted at about 1:50 a.m. at 16th and Alabama streets, according to police.

“Two suspects began shooting at each other, and a bullet from one of the suspects struck an uninvolved bystander victim in the lower leg,” spokesman Officer Albie Esparza said.

Esparza said the victim was hospitalized and expected to survive, and the suspects were arrested. Their names were not released.

The Mission district has seen its share of gang violence recently but no information was immediately available from police as to whether Sunday’s shooting was gang-related.
