Business briefs: UPS and New Jersey 

After persuasion from New Jersey’s governor and attorney general, the world’s largest package-delivery company, UPS Inc., said it would extend health insurance benefits to the civil-union partners of gay employees covered by a union contract. New Jersey law gives civil unions the same rights as married couples; UPS (UPS) had said partners were legally different from spouses.

Wall Street became increasingly skittish about media mogul Rupert Murdoch’s prospects for clinching a deal to buy The Wall Street Journal’s publisher, sending its stock down more than 5 percent Monday as a deadline arrived for the Journal’s controlling shareholders to make a decision. Members of the Bancroft family have controlled Dow Jones (DJ) for a century.
