Business briefs: Radiohead downloads 

More than half of those who downloaded Radiohead’s new album "In Rainbows" chose to pay nothing, but the remaining 38 percent voluntarily paid an average of $6, accordingto a study by a consumer research firm. In a closely watched experiment the British band released its most recent album online last month and allowed consumers to choose how much to pay for it.

IMPORT SAFETY

The federal government would toughen its policing of products from abroad under steps proposed by President Bush on Tuesday after a rash of recalls of dangerous toothpaste, dog food and toys. Acting on recommendations from an advisory panel, Bush proposed that the Food and Drug Administration be empowered to order mandatory recalls of unsafe food products.
