Business briefs: Banana wars, disappearing kegs

The United States will ask for a legal review of the European Union’s import rules for bananas at a meeting of the World Trade Organization’s dispute body next week, signaling the reemergence of the WTO’s longest-running dispute. Banana importers from the U.S. and Latin America have been fighting EU rules that give preference to African and Caribbean countries.

DISAPPEARING KEGS

Rising scrap metal prices are leading to an increase in theft of stainless steel beer kegs, resulting in losses to the beer industry of up to $50 million a year. The beer industry and the scrap metal recycling industry are pushing for legislation that would require scrap metal recyclers to ask for identification and proof of ownership from would-be sellers.
