Business briefs: Airline delays

Eight U.S. airlines may be fined for failing to tell customers how often flights are delayed, in violation of federal law. The U.S. Transportation Department will also notify "many" of the 20 largest U.S. airlines that they are being investigated for unrealistic scheduling. The U.S. regulator is stepping up enforcement after airline customer service failures prompted congressional criticism.

ABN Amro NV agreed to a $91.16 billion takeover by Barclays PLC, a merger that would create one of the world’s largest banks, and to sell its U.S. assets, holding off a bidby three banks that would have carved up the Netherlands’ largest bank. The proposed chief executive of the new group, Barclays CEO John Varley, called the deal "the largest merger ever in global financial industry."
