Burton High School finance students help low-income residents with taxes

Tax season is upon us.

For the second year in a row, some residents will get much needed help with their returns.

That’s because students at Burton High School’s Academy of Finance will help prepare tax returns for low-income city residents for free.

Clinics to help residents with their returns will be held Monday and Wednesday from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the high school, located at 400 Mansell St.

By helping prepare returns, students will sharpen math skills, computer skills and collaborate with others on complex problems. The clinic gives them context for running their own small business, according to district officials.

Last tax season, students completed 59 returns, saving taxpayers $108,641, according to district officials.
