Budget hearing to last long into the night

The Board of Supervisors Budget and Finance Committee will hold a 4 p.m. public comment on Mayor Gavin Newsom’s proposed $6.5 billion city and county budget.

Newsom had to close a $483 million budget deficit. How he did it, the proposed cuts and all sorts of other proposals will be sounded off on by residents.

At the 10 a.m. start of the Monday committee hearing, committee chair Supervisor John Avalos said, “We are actually going to have public comment … definitely late in the evening, maybe early in the morning, although Supervisor [Sean] Elsbernd thinks we are going to be out at 11:35 [p.m.] or so. I said 10:30 [p.m.].”

Avalos also waxed poetic: “We are going to do it till we get through it so we better get to it.”
