Broadway hits on the way to San Francisco 

“Shrek the Musical” and “Billy Elliot” are among the Broadway shows coming to San Francisco in the near future.

SHN recently announced its 2010-11 Best of Broadway season, which opens with “Shrek the Musical,” the fairytale based on the animated film, onstage Dec. 1 through Jan. 2 at the Orpheum Theatre.

The emotional powerhouse musical “Next to Normal,” featuring Alice Ripley in her Tony Award-winning role, runs Jan. 25 through Feb. 20 at the Curran Theatre.

The 1980s-themed “Rock of Ages,” featuring music by Journey, Night Ranger, Styx, REO Speedwagon, Pat Benatar, Twisted Sister and others, will be at the Curran from March 8 through April 3.

Combining comedy, music and technology, the Blue Man Group will be at the Golden Gate Theatre from May 24 through June 19, 2011.

The Tony Award-winning best musical “Billy Elliot” opens Sept. 13 at the Orpheum Theatre.
