Bridge toll increase moves closer to reality

A proposal for toll increases on seven Bay Area bridges is now one step away from being finalized.

The plan — which calls for a $1 toll hike on six state-owned bridges in the area, a $2 increase on the Bay Bridge during peak commute times and a $2.50 surcharge for carpoolers — was approved by the Bay Area Toll Authority’s Oversight Committee on Tuesday. Final approval is expected by the full board Jan. 27. The toll would go into effect July 1.

The Golden Gate Bridge is not affected.

A plan to raise tolls for truckers — with prices based on the number of axles per vehicle — was altered so that the vehicles would only pay 50 percent of the scheduled toll increase when it goes into effect July 1, 2011.
