Bridge district to formally accept $5 million for suicide net

While $5 million was recently pledged to help design the Golden Gate Bridge’s suicide deterrent system, the bridge district still needs to formally accept the money.

Next Friday, the district’s Board of Directors will officially complete the transaction.

Although the district approved plans for a suicide deterrent system in 2008, finding funding for the $50 million project has been difficult.

Last month, the Metropolitan Transportation Commission approved a $5 million allocation for the design phase of a netting system below the bridge. It was the first funding dedicated for the project.

On Aug. 13, the Golden Gate Bridge District Board of Directors is expected to formally accept the funding allocation. The remaining $45 million is still unsecured.
