Boys and Girls Club welcome wears thin

Residents in the Bayshore neighborhood of Daly City who encounter rude staff members at the DeLue Boys and Girls Club can expect a seat "at the table" when discussing any problems they might encounter.

After the city threatened to disallow the club’s use of the community center on Martin Street — to get the club’s attention, city officials said — a joint group made up of two City Council members and two Mid-Peninsula Boys and Girls Club board members was formed Wednesday to create a forum for the community to voice any complaints or concerns with the club.

"We want the community there at the table to weigh in on issues the city has raised," Daly City’s City Manager Pat Martel said.

Residents complained to the city more than a month ago about allegedly gruff staff members at the club that provided little to no information — charges that caught the Boys and Girls Club by surprise.

The club operates out of the city’s Bayshore Community Center, completed in March 2006 and costing $8.6 million, which also hosts the Bayshore Branch of the public library and Parks and Recreation programs. Between 90 and 105 kids use the club daily and they come from a wide cross-section of backgrounds, Executive Director Dan Dadoun said.

Martel said the threat by Daly City, giving the club 90 days to fix any operational problems, was purely a tactic to get the club’s attention. The city essentially pays the Boys and Girls Club $175,000 annually to operate out of the center as it conducts various educational and recreational programs helping children in the area.

Boys and Girls Club Board Member Mike Callagy, a captain in San Mateo’s police department, said the meeting Wednesday was "productive."

Among other things, the committee found that residents did not understand why, when a family pays $40 annually for the use of the center, the child owes $2 when he shows up at the center use the gym after 7 p.m., Callagy said. By then the Parks and Recreation Department is running the gym, not the Boys and Girls Club.
