It looks like the final chapter of Borderlands Books will need to be revised.

Less less than 48 hours after the Mission district bookstore posted a potential solution to its demise Thursday, it reached its own goal to avoid closure. More than 300 people signed up for $100 annual sponsorships of Borderlands, meaning the shop will stay afloat for at least the next year.

The contributions satisfied owner Alan Beatts’ plan to find 300 people by March 31 for the annual sponsorships, which he said would balance out the impacts of San Francisco’s gradual minimum wage increase to $15 an hour by 2018.

As of Monday, 449 sponsors from across the nation, The Netherlands, U.K., Canada and Australia prevented the bookstore from closing at least until March 31, 2016. Beatts said the store needs 300 annual sponsorships for the business to continue past that date.

“Two people came up to me in the cafe this morning as I was having tea and, in both cases, just handed me a $100 bill,” Beatts said of his business adjoining the bookstore.

The downpour of contributions began within the first two hours after Beatts blogged about a potential means to save Borderlands. In just that time, Beatts said more than 70 people called in or emailed their support, and the next morning the store was taking calls for most of the day from people interested in becoming sponsors.

“Though it has slowed down quite a bit from this weekend,” Beatts said, “people are still getting in touch.”

The sponsorships include special benefits such as donor-only events, clothing and first access to limited-availability items. For a small fee, Beatts’ adjoining cafe will also be made available after hours for sponsors, he said.

Those interested in sponsoring Borderlands can still contribute in person, over the phone or by mail. Borderlands is located at 866 Valencia St. in the Mission. More information is available on the shop’s blog.
