  • This Jan. 20, 2013 file photo shows, Helena Bonham Carter and Tim Burton at the 33rd London Critics Circle Film Awards at the May Fair Hotel in London. Longtime partners Bonham Carter and Burton have separated. A spokeswoman for Bonham Carter confirmed Tuesday, Dec. 23, 2014, that the couple split earlier this year.

She was the rose to his thorn, the lace to his leather, the Edgar Allen to his Poe. But after 13 years, Helena Bonham Carter and Tim Burton have decided to end Hollywood's most exquisitely goth love story.

Bonham Carter confirmed Tuesday that the couple had split earlier this year, The Associated Press reported.

The two "have continued to be friends and co-parent their children," Bonham Carter's publicist told The AP. The couple, who never married, have a son and daughter from the relationship, which began when Burton directed Bonham Carter in 2001's "Planet of the Apes," which was so poorly received the franchise was relaunched practically before the popcorn had been swept from the theaters.

Along with their two children, Burton and Bonham Carter's collaborations include "Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street," "Alice in Wonderland" and "Dark Shadows."

The latter three films also starred Burton's muse Johnny Depp, who was unavailable for comment Tuesday. Legions of heartbroken teenage girls, many sporting black lipstick and matching black nail polish, were also unavailable for comment.
