Bonds' son pleads not guilty in fight charges

The 20-year-old son of former San Francisco Giants slugger Barry Bonds appeared in court Tuesday, accompanied by his famous father, to plead not guilty to several misdemeanor charges stemming from a fight the younger Bonds had with his mother last month.

Nikolai Lamar Bonds was arraigned in San Mateo County Superior Court on Tuesday morning. His father and an attorney accompanied him, according to Chief Deputy District Attorney Steve Wagstaffe.

Bonds faces five misdemeanor charges after an argument with his mother Dec. 5 in their Menlo Park home. According to Wagstaffe, the fight started as a disagreement over some jewelry that was missing from the home.

Bonds apparently spit in his mother's face and forcibly prevented her from running from their house, Wagstaffe said. He smashed a crystal bowl and some furniture during their disagreement.

Menlo Park police arrived at the home shortly after 10 a.m. As Bonds was placed under arrest, he threatened to kill the officer and harm his family, Wagstaffe said.

Bonds faces one count each of battery, false imprisonment and vandalism for allegedly spitting on his mother, preventing her from leaving and destroying her property, according to Wagstaffe. The fourth and fifth misdemeanor counts of obstructing justice and threatening an officer, stem from his behavior during his arrest.

After being taken into custody, Bonds posted $50,000 bail and was released at about 10 p.m. that same day.

Bonds is scheduled to return to court Feb. 3 at 9 a.m. to schedule a trial date. His attorney, Josh Bentley, requested more time so he could review police reports from the incident, Wagstaffe said.

Barry Bonds joined the San Francisco Giants in 1993 and played for the team until 2007. He and Nikolai's mother, Sun Bonds, are divorced.
