Boehner contemplates kicking the cigarette habit

House Minority Leader John Boehner said Wednesday he’ll give up his cigarette habit, but only if a close friend does it first.

Boehner, who met with reporters Wednesday at a Christian Science Monitor lunch, is a longtime smoker who used to light up in the House Speaker’s Lobby until Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., banned the practice in 2007. Boehner now smokes in his office, or out on the Speaker’s Lobby balcony with the rest of the House smoking caucus.

But Boehner could be ready to quit. When asked whether he would give it up if he became House speaker, he said, “I have a close friend who also smokes and he has some health issues. His doctor urged him to quit smoking and I told him if he quits, I’ll quit.”

Boehner has not disclosed who this mystery smoker is, but there are a number of GOP House lawmakers who smoke that Boehner pals around with.
