Body found inside Richmond district home during fire

An elderly man was found dead inside a home that caught fire in the Richmond district Wednesday morning.

The fire started in the kitchen of a white, one-story house at 706 17th Ave. near the corner of Cabrillo Street at 8:45 a.m., and a neighbor had called 911 because of the flames, said fire Lt. Mindy Talmadge.

As soon as firefighters got water on the fire, which was bursting out the windows when they arrived, they went inside and found the man. However, details regarding the circumstances are under investigation and cannot be released, Talmadge said.

The medical examiner had not yet identified him or determined the cause of death Thursday morning, but fire investigators said it did not look suspicious.

The one-alarm fire was extinguished within the hour and was mostly contained to the kitchen, she said.
