Blue Angels show canceled Saturday due to heavy fog

Fans that came out to see the Blue Angels perform Saturday missed out on that show as it was cancelled due to heavy fog.

The highlight of The City’s popular Fleet Week weekend, the Navy’s flight demonstration team was scheduled to begin their show at 3 p.m.  Although they did take off from San Francisco International Airport on schedule,

Fog moved into the skies, making it dangerous for the jets to fly due to the poor visibility, according to Navy Commander Greg McWherter.

Safety is more important that putting on a show,” said McWherter.

The jets are not allowed to fly in air shows when there is fog below 1,500 feet due to the poor visibility, he said.  After only one maneuver, the show was called off.

Audiences did get a chance to see other acrobatic pilot demonstrations that took place before the Blue Angels show.

Unless heavy fog once again becomes an issue, a second Blue Angels show scheduled for Sunday will go on as planned said Mary Hickey, spokeswoman for Fleet Week.
