Bill Gates unveils Microsoft’s latest efforts

Greater investment in technology to improve health care and education would help ease economic inequality, the Microsoft Corp. (MSFT) chairman said from Beijing, adding that he sees no limits to the technological revolution. Gates unveiled his company’s latest efforts to bridge the digital divide, including $3 software packages for government-subsidized student computers.

Shares of MetroPCS Communications Inc. (PCS) climbed as the cell-phone carrier debuted on the New York Stock Exchange with the year’s first IPO to raise more than $1 billion. The initial public offering price was $23 for each of the 50 million shares, putting the total value at $1.15 billion. MetroPCS is the first $1 billion-plus IPO from the U.S. technology and telecom sectors since late 2004.
