Big-rig accident blocks northbound I-880

An accident involving a vehicle and a big rig on northbound Interstate 880 at Fifth Avenue in Oakland this morning has closed the No. 3 and No. 4 lanes, California Highway Patrol Officer Kevin Kroncke said.

The accident was reported at 8:26 a.m., and a Sig alert was issued for the highway at 8:35 a.m., Kroncke said.

The big rig’s axle was removed in the accident, and fuel is spilling onto the highway, Kroncke said.

There is no estimated time for re-opening lanes, he added.

A ban forbidding big rigs from traveling on Interstate 580 has been lifted and big rigs are being diverted onto I-580 to avoid the I-880 accident, Kroncke said.
