Bicyclist killed in hit-and-run

A bicyclist died Friday night in a hit-and-run crash at a dangerous intersection in the northern Panhandle neighborhood, police said Saturday.

A collision between the bicyclist and a 1989 Mercedes happened at about 10:40 p.m. at Turk Street and Masonic Avenue, according to police spokesman Officer Samson Chan. Both the bicyclist and car were going south on Masonic Avenue when the car hit the biker.

The bicyclist’s name was not immediately available, but he was described as a 21-year-old white male. The driver, a 38-year-old man, left the scene but was arrested about two blocks away, Chan said.

“It was not a pursuit or anything,” Chan said. “The officers didn’t witness the incident but they were in the area and made the arrest.”

The suspect’s name has yet to be released. He was booked on vehicular manslaughter, Chan said.
