Best Coast’s Bethany Cosentino grooves for Planned Parenthood

Fans of Best Coast bandleader Bethany Cosentino may think she’s just a lovable, surf-obsessed stoner who loves tweeting everything you ever wanted to know about her cat, Snacks (who’s pictured on the cover of the group’s recent debut, “Crazy For You”). But she recently startled the blogosphere by making a special YouTube video that not only staunchly backs the embattled Planned Parenthood, but announces a June 16 Best Coast benefit for the organization in New York.

She doesn’t like wading into politics, she says, but she feels so strongly about Planned Parenthood — whose resources she swears by — that she simply had to get involved in educating people on what it’s really all about.

Best Coast is busy on other fronts, too.

They’ll return to San Francisco to play Outside Lands on Aug. 12. But you can hear them live, right now, by hitting the iTunes Store and snagging their brand-new “iTunes Session,” which was recorded at East West Studios, where The Beach Boys tracked “Pet Sounds” and The Mamas And The Papas conjured up “California Dreaming.”

Makes perfect sense, given Cosentino’s sunny, Ventures-jangly sound. Alongside a cool new cover of Loretta Lynn’s “Fist City” and an exclusive iTunes interview are slower, more ethereal takes on the BC morsels “Over The Ocean,” “Crazy For You,” “Goodbye,” “Boyfriend,” “When I’m With You,” “Something In The Way” and “Our Deal.”
