Belmont high school grad going to Cal with Lockheed's help

Ryan Fong, an 18-year-old recent graduate of Carlmont High School in Belmont, received a $3,000 annual scholarship from Lockheed Martin to study mechanical engineering at UC Berkeley.

What makes you want to be a mechanical engineer? My dad was an engineer, so he took me to work a lot when I was younger and I was inspired by all the work he has done. He works at Lockheed Martin.

What’s your overall goal in becoming an engineer? I want to study aerospace. I like working on new projects. I’ve been good in math and science, and it’s always been a strong area for me.

Are you excited about attending UC Berkeley? Both my parents went to Berkeley and I’ve wanted to go there ever since I was young. I stayed at an overnight program there and got a lot of tips about what to take and how to handle college. You have to work hard and try to maintain a balance with your social life and education.

If given the opportunity to go to space, would you do it? I’m going to say ... yes.
