Bay Bridge lanes closed after big rig spills sand

Three of the lanes on the lower deck of the Bay Bridge are closed as a street sweeper attempts to clean sand spilled from a big-rig trailer.

A tracker trailer dropped roughly 50 feet or more of sand on the bridge at Treasure Island on Thursday afternoon around 2:15 p.m., according to California Highway Patrol Officer Eric Anderson.

There were no injuries as a result of the sand on the roadway, Anderson said, but traffic is backed up into San Francisco.

Anderson said the cause for the sand to spill is unknown, though it seems the trailer’s lock malfunctioned.

Anderson said he expects all lanes to be reopened by 4 p.m.
