Bay Bridge lane closures planned for tonight

Lanes of the Bay Bridge are scheduled to be shut down Friday night and into Saturday morning so repairs can be made to a cracked support beam.

The damaged support, called an eyebar, was discovered during a planned closure of the span during Labor Day weekend. Repairs were made, but just weeks later, on Oct. 30, the fixes failed, sending pieces of metal down onto the roadway during rush-hour traffic. The bridge was shuttered for nearly a week while new repairs were made.

Caltrans, which is oversees the operations of the bridge, acknowledged that a longer-term solution for the cracked eyebar was needed.

The agency announced that it had come up with a solution that would allow for the bridge to stay open during the repairs.

If the weather permits, three upper lanes on the bridge will be closed starting tonight. One lower lane will also be closed. The lane closures are expected to last about three weeks.

The closures are expected to begin around 10 p.m. Friday, according to Caltrans documents.
