The Playwrights Foundation has announced the winners of the 30th anniversary Bay Area Playwrights Festival, celebrating its 30th annviersary this year, an annual event focusing on new plays by both emerging and established playwrights.

This year’s festival, at San Francisco’s Magic Theatre, Aug. 3-12, will feature works by local playwrights Julie Hébert, a BAPF alumna, and Christopher Chen, a recent graduate of San Francisco State University. National playwrights featured will be Annie Baker, Samuel D. Hunter, Zakiyyah Alexander and Kevin Oakes.

The festival also will include four one-act plays by local playwrights as part of its Bay Area Shorts program. Those winning writers are Aaron Loeb, Scott McMorrow, Denize Springer, and BAPF alumna Marisela Traviño Orta.

In addition to developing 10 new plays, the festival has audience discussions, panel discussions for playwrights, a symposium on issues in new play development with directors and playwrights, and receptions for audiences to meet artists.
