Bay Area flights to Hawaii delayed on tsunami fears

Flights from Bay Area airports to Hawaii are delayed today after a major earthquake in Chile overnight prompted a tsunami warning for Hawaii.

An American Airlines flight from San Francisco International Airport to Honolulu has been delayed at least three hours, SFO duty manager Lily Wang said.

United Airlines and Hawaiian Airlines flights from SFO to Maui, Honolulu and Kona will likely be delayed as well, but estimated departure times have not yet been announced, according to Wang.

"A decision will be made closer to departure," Wang said.

A tsunami warning is in effect in Hawaii this afternoon, and a tsunami advisory has been issued along the West Coast with a tsunami expected to hit about 1:26 p.m., National Weather Service forecaster Diana Henderson said.

An Alaska Airlines flight from Oakland International Airport to Kahului, Hawaii has been delayed as well.

Chile's international airport in Santiago is closed today, but there were no direct flights scheduled from SFO or Oakland International Airport to Chile.
