BART station closed after police fatally shoot man with a knife

A knife-wielding man was shot and killed at Civic Center BART station Sunday night, shuttering service at the downtown stop.

BART spokesman Linton Johnson said a police officer shot a suspect who was allegedly carrying a knife. It is not clear yet whether the officer was a BART police officer.

KGO radio reported that the man was transported to San Francisco General Hospital and was pronounced dead.

As of 11 p.m. trains were running through the Civic Center station without stopping, and witnesses at the scene told The San Francisco Examiner that BART announcements said service would not resume for the rest of the night.

San Francisco police and BART police were investigating the incident.
