BART seeks input on next police chief

Who would you like to see as BART’s next chief of police? Bay Area Rapid Transit wants to know.

The transit agency, which is in the midst of a nationwide search for a new leader for its police force, will host a forum to allow the public to voice their thoughts on what  background, experience and characteristics the new chief should possess.

In April, current police Chief Gary Gee announced he would be retiring at the end of this year. The announcement came after a police officer was videotaped killing 22-year-old Oscar Grant III, an incident that placed the department and Gee’s leadership under intense scrutiny. The public forum may be a chance to shore up public support and belief in the beleaguered police department.

The forum will be held Thursday at 6 p.m. It will be held at the Joseph P. Bort MetroCenter Auditorium, across from the Lake Merritt BART station.
