BART commuters are experiencing major delays this morning commute due to an overnight wreck in the Transbay Tube that has significantly backed up service.

Two BART maintenance trucks collided inside the tube just after 2:30 a.m., damaging a 380-foot section of the subterranean trackway. As a result, BART trains were only using one of the two tracks inside the tube for the morning commute, reducing the normal amount of hourly trains from 23 to eight. Passengers are currently experiencing delays of 30 minutes or more.

BART officials ended the single-tracking system at 9 a.m., but they are expected to resume that system at 11:30 for needed repair work. Passengers should expect delays of 20 – 30 minutes between 11:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m., but BART plans to have the problem fixed and service restored to normal by the evening commute.
