BART kicks off free rides for military members on Thursday

Starting on Thursday, military officers in the Bay Area will be able to hop on BART for free.

The regional transit agency has earmarked $50,000 in funding to provide complimentary trips for local service members. BART is the first transit agency of its kind to offer up the free service, which is available to military officers on leave from Iraq and Afghanistan.

Military members and BART officials will hold a press conference at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday at the Lake Merritt Station in Oakland to launch the program.
