BART extension project receives $19 million in funding from toll revenue

BART’s $463 million eastward expansion plan in Contra Costa County received a boost today when a committee of the Metropolitan Transportation Commission agreed to direct $19 million in toll money toward the project.

At its meeting on Wednesday, the MTC’s Programming and Allocations Committee approved the funding proposal to go toward the project’s construction, which began last year.

The extension project—called eBART—is expected to cater to 10,100 passengers by the time it opens for service in 2015.

Despite the increase in ridership, some BART board members question whether the project is worth it, particularly at a time when the agency is looking at $7.1 billion shortfall just to maintain its current system.
