BART committee to study possibility of changing operating hours

Following the lead of its newly appointed board president, BART will convene a study group to investigate the possibility of changing its operating hours.

At his first meeting as the president of BART’s Board of Directors, Bob Franklin brought up the long-discussed issue of extending the transit agency’s operating times during the weekends. While applauded by passengers, the proposal is complicated, since the agency needs several hours of unfettered access to the railway each day to conduct maintenance checkups.

The new working group will focus on ways to extend service without jeopardizing BART’s maintenance work, according to an agency release. It will begin meeting next year, and will be chaired by Paul Oversier, BART’s assistant general manager of operations.
