Barker seeks end to UVa's use of cats in training

Former game show host Bob Barker is asking the University of Virginia to stop using live cats in medical training.

Barker says in a letter to U.Va. President Teresa A. Sullivan that he's concerned about the pain and suffering experienced by the animals. He says high-tech simulators should be used instead.

The Daily Progress ( ) received a copy of the letter from the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine.

The committee also is seeking a halt to U.Va.'s use of cats in training residents on how to insert breathing tubes in newborns.

University spokeswoman Carol Wood says U.Va. hasn't yet received Barker's letter. She says the university's physicians believe the use of cats is the most effective teaching method available.
