Bamboozled: Politico allegedly conned NYC Mayor Michael Bloomberg for $1.1 million

WHAT: Political operative John Haggerty now faces a trial for allegedly bilking New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg out of $1.1 million. A New York judge rejected Haggerty’s bid to have all charges against him dismissed.

HOW: Prosecutors said Haggerty persuaded the billionaire to give him $1.1 million for poll-watching by the state Independence Party in 2009. The party paid $750,000 back to Haggerty, which he allegedly used to buy a house and for personal expenses.

WHY IT’S OUTRAGEOUS: Bloomberg’s wealth and stature "don’t make the case a victimless crime," the judge said. Haggerty "is not Robin Hood, stealing from the rich and giving to the poor."
