Balboa High School senior headed to White House for youth conference

A San Francisco high school senior is among a handful of students selected by White House officials to attend a youth forum in Washington, D.C. on Friday, a school district spokeswoman said.

Huimin "Happy" Yang, 18, left for the nation's capitol on Wednesday to attend the White House Initiative on Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders Youth Leadership Briefing, San Francisco Unified School District spokeswoman Heidi Anderson said.

Yang, who attends Balboa High School, was invited to the event by John Trasvina, the Assistant Secretary for Housing and Urban Development.

The event program includes speakers from various government sectors, and panel discussions regarding education resources, civil rights, entrepreneurship and public service.

Yang, who immigrated with her family to the United States from China two years ago, has served on the San Francisco Youth Commission and in 2011 received the Koshland Young Leader Award from the San Francisco Foundation.
