Backing Israel is key to global security

A letter writer, Marc Perkel (Letters, March 2), believes that Israel wants to keep America out of the loop in regard to if, when and where they might launch a pre-emptive strike against Iran.

Can you blame them? America and a do-nothing United Nations have done absolutely nothing to show Israel’s people they can indeed trust us to act before it’s too late. Sure, President Barack Obama talks big, when he’s not too busy bowing in apology for everything America does.

And needless to say, his “don’t let Iran cross that red line” statement is merely so much election campaign rhetoric. The writer also mentioned that the Israelis will want us to back them once a war begins. We had certainly better, because the security of the entire planet hangs in the balance, and anyone who fails to believe that is living in a fairy-tale world.

The author of that letter stated if it were up to him, if Israel attacks Iran without including the U.S. in the decision, then they should have to go it alone.

As for me, I’ll sleep well, knowing that such dire matters are not up to him!

Israel must protect itself

Marc Perkel (Letters, March 2) demands Israel fight Iran alone unless it gets America’s approval to defend itself against annihilation.

What that letter writer ignores is that Israel is considered by Iran to be the “Little Satan,” and America is the “Great Satan.”

If Israel does not stop the nuclear weapons of this mad theocracy, America is up next for annihilation.

Iran nukes must be halted

To letter writer Marc Perkel (Letters, March 2), who wants Israel to go it alone if war with Iran becomes necessary: Israel simply wants the U.S. to know that at a certain point in Iran’s march towards a nuclear weapon, there will come a point where Israel — a country the size of New Jersey — will not be able to strike Iran. After that tipping point, if the world cannot live with a nuclear-armed Iranian Islamic dictatorship, then it will be up to everyone else.

If you will recall, WikiLeaks cables revealed that from Saudi Arabia to Bahrain, from the United Arab Emirates to Egypt, Arab leaders were imploring the United States to confront the Iranians. Saudi Arabia’s King Abdullah pleaded with President Barack Obama to “cut off the head of the [Iranian] snake.”

If America goes to war with Iran, this will more likely be the reason.

Corporate greed indeed

I really got a kick out of the Al Lewis column (‘Psychos Loose on Wall Street,’ March 4). I am not surprised there are so many “over the top” aggressive types in important positions on Wall Street, as well as so many other places in business. Just look at the incentives and type of behavior that is rewarded.

The sociopath and psychopath monikers were nicely dealt with in the brilliant film ‘The Corporation’ by Mark Achbar back in 2004. By its very nature, “the corporation” only rewards growth and is insistent that growing shareholder value and other growth-oriented goals are paramount. Expecting other outcomes is just wishful thinking.

The first half-hour of the film lays it out nicely. Corporations are indeed psychopaths by nature. So, if “human values” are desired, then corporate personhood should be re-examined.
