Autopsy finds surgeon in teen sex case killed self

An autopsy confirms that a Mammoth Lakes surgeon charged with sex crimes against a 14-year-old girl killed himself.

The Mono County Sheriff's Department said Friday that a coroner's investigation determined 46-year-old Andrew Bourne did commit suicide Jan. 24.

The exact cause of death is still pending toxicological results, which could take several weeks.

Bourne was found dead by his wife two weeks after he posted bail and was outfitted with a GPS ankle tracking device. There was no suicide note.

Bourne, head of vascular surgery at Mammoth Hospital and a school board member, was charged with sexual misconduct with the Santa Barbara County teenager.

A co-defendant, 48-year-old Joseph Walker, was also charged.

They both pleaded not guilty.

Santa Barbara prosecutors say the defendants had a two-year relationship with the girl.
